Long Island Nursery & Landscape Association 2024/25 Silver Award Winner
BEFORE
AFTER
GOALS
After removing an overgrown and unsightly row of pines, the client sought to transform their previously unusable side yard into a functional and inviting outdoor retreat. The vision was to create a comfortable lounge area with firepit, surrounded by lush plantings to add year-round beauty and texture.
- Level grade for better functionality
- Add patio for entertaining
- Add firepit for warm gatherings
- Create a secluded environment
Budget: $25,000
Services
- Grading of Property
- Steppingstone Walkway
- Stone Walls
- Privacy and Seasonal Plantings
APPROACH
The designer began by assessing the condition of the backyard and identifying the challenges: poor soil quality, uneven grade, and remaining roots from the pines to work around. Using moss rock, necessary adjustments were made to the grade to allow for a level, stable surface for the patio.
Topsoil and compost were added to improve the quality of the existing soil. The wood retaining walls were cleaned and repaired to preserve their functionality. The steppingstone path seamlessly joins all areas while maintaining the natural feel of the yard. The rustic irregular bluestone patio nestles into the landscape perfectly.
The shrubs planted in front of the retaining walls soften their appearance and mask their outdated aesthetic. Plantings were chosen carefully to provide blooms for the maximum time ranging from early spring Rhododendrons to the late blooming Hydrangea Paniculata tree. Bright chartreuse foliage contrasts with dark burgundies to compliment flower colors. Plantings are arranged in drifts to form layers. Ferns and boulders complete the project by creating texture and interest.
PLANTING COMPONENTS
- Screen planting of schip laurels to create solid privacy backdrop
- Rhododendron and Azalea for early spring color
- Different types of hydrangeas paired with hypericum and Astilbe to extend bloom time
- Purple and chartreuse foliage plants to add color not limited by flowers
- Natural boulders to support grade differences and make a large enough flat area for patio/fireplace area
RESULT
Despite the challenges of the site, the designer not only met but exceeded the client’s vision, transforming an overlooked section of the property into a tranquil and inviting retreat.
To maintain the budget, the existing wood retaining walls were carefully repaired, preserving both structure and character. Strategically placed boulders helped retain the grade near the fence, a crucial step in creating a level foundation for the new patio.
A rustic yet functional stepping-stone path now invites movement through the space, while a thoughtfully curated selection of diverse plantings adds depth, color, privacy and seasonal interest.
The result? A once-forgotten side yard has been reimagined as “This Side of Paradise.”
