GOALS

After having completed a large retaining wall project, our client was forced to re-create their property due to the damage from heavy machinery.

Landscape restoration plan

  • Give the backyard a park-like feel
  • Use larger specimens to give the landscape a more mature feel
  • Convert a temporary access road into plantings
  • Use plantings to increase privacy

Budget: $100,000+

Services

  • Gravel back yard
  • Gravel walkway
  • Plantings for privacy and beauty
  • Reset bluestone patio

APPROACH

This project was unusual in the sense that it was a re-creation of a previously existing space as opposed to being a new design. The client had a broad knowledge of horticulture and a specific vision for her project.  Since new lighting conditions were created, some areas had to be reinterpreted.  After tweaking the original proposal to better suit our client’s needs, the project was ready to begin.

  • Painstakingly studied original photos to authentically replicate landscape client had previously
  • Reviewed new conditions to suggest additional specimens for variety and color
  • Transplanted surviving shrubs and perennials to pond walk

VIEW PLAN

PLANTING COMPONENTS

  • Ground cover evergreens were used as a natural barrier
  • Schip Laurels serve as a visual barrier
  • Front lawn was replaced with gravel to limit nitrate and other chemical runoff
  • Specimens were chosen to vary bloom times and provide 4-season interest
  • Shade perennials and shrubs including Hosta, Ferns, Itea, Hakonechloa

RESULT

The overall result was a seamless re-creation of a previously mature landscape from the front to the back of the home. Our client can relax and enjoy the serenity of her one-of-a-kind back yard in privacy. Paradise was found.

WHAT THE CLIENT SAID

“After rainfall and reassuring checks of the drainage (yay! you nailed it), I mostly strolled about, incredulously taking it in. Not only can I enjoy what is there now, but I can also now see the mature version. Beautiful and interesting. We’re very happy to see the variety of plantings with attention to something in bloom throughout the seasons and are really looking forward to this part of the work.”
